THE CRUCIFIED LIFE – PART 3
By Pastor Jared Decker
v20. I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
v11. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Part 3 of the Series:
The Crucified Flesh
The last couple of weeks, we focused on the necessity of having a crucified heart and mind.
As a child of God, we have only two options of living…in the flesh or in the Spirit. Though we live in the flesh, we should crucify the desire to walk in the flesh.
1 John 2:15-16
v15. Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
v16. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
Why must we not love the things of the world? Why is this action necessary? Why must we not walk in the flesh?
The answer lies in the consequences of the works of the flesh, For God never commands anything that is not good for us!
Paul expressed the conflict and error of the flesh in this way in…
v18. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
Christ himself issued a warning to the disciples on the same issue
v41. Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
The first sin of mankind was a battle of the flesh.
Each area that we battle in the flesh today was a part of that original battle in the Garden of Eden.
Genesis 3:1-6 gives us an outline of events that concur with the concise warning about the flesh in 1 John 2:15-16…
1. Lust of the Flesh.
These are the things that appeal to us physically.
v6. And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food…
The first area of temptation for Eve is no different than the first area of temptation Satan applies to us every day.
v13. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
v14. But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof.
2. Lust of the Eyes.
These are the things that appeal to us visually.
v6. …that it was pleasant to the eyes…
v51. Mine eye affecteth mine heart…
v3. I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.
3. Pride of Life.
These are the things that appeal to us emotionally.
v6. …a tree to be desired to make one wise…
v18. Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.
v7. Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
v8. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
