THE JEHOVAH TITLES

By Pastor Jared Decker

JEHOVAH-JIREH

An introduction is essential to this series. In Scripture, God reveals himself through names that describe His character and relationships with mankind.

The first name given to us in Genesis 1:1 is the name “God” – which is the title – Elohim. This name describes the character of God as the creator of all things. The relationship between God and man indicated in this name is of creator and creation.

The next name we are introduced to in Genesis 2:4 is the name “LORD” – which is the title – Jehovah. This name specifically denotes Him as the one true God. The relationship between God and man indicated in this name is a personal covenantal one.

To more fully describe the relationships by which God would deal with man, we find ten Jehovah compound names throughout Scripture.

First Mention: Genesis 22:14
And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.

Meaning: The Lord Will Provide

1. He Provides Eternal Life.
    John 3:16, John 6:48-51, 1 John 5:13

God did provide Himself as a Lamb to pay the ultimate price for sin and provide for the atonement of the soul of all who will believe. He provided for our eternity on the Cross of Calvary.

2. He Provides Abundant Life.
    John 10:9-10, Ephesians 3:20-21

The LORD has not only provided what is necessary for eternal life, but also what is necessary for the abundant Christian life.

3. He Provides Required Life.
    Philippians 4:19, Hebrews 4:15-16, Matthew 6:25-34

The LORD has not only provided what is necessary for eternal life and abundant life, but also what is necessary for the every day needs of His children.

4. He Provides Illuminated Life.
    Psalms 119:105

The LORD, Jehovah-Jireh, has also provided enlightenment! He has provided the wisdom and understanding for His people to know how to walk in this world and how to recognize the signs of the times and live accordingly. The ultimate tool of enlightenment God has provided is His Word.

A. Light To Walk By.
    John 8:12, Ephesians 5:8-16

B. Light To Live By.
    2 Peter 1:19, Psalms 119:130
