First Mention: Psalm 23:1
v1. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
v2. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
v3. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
v4. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
v5. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
v6. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

Meaning: The Lord My Shepherd

As our Shepherd, the LORD works in our lives just as a Father works in his family…

1. He Satisfies the Wanting. – vs. 1

Matthew 9:36
v36. But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.

In Matthew 10:6, Jesus described them as the “lost sheep” of the house of Israel…but the Bible says,

Isaiah 53:6
v6. All we like sheep have gone astray…

Matthew 18:11
v11. For the son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

John 10:7-11
v7. Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep.
v8. All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them.
v9. I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.
v10. The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
v11. I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.


2. He Steers the Wandering. – vs. 2
                                              
John 10:27-30
v27. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
v28. And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
v29. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.
v30. I and my Father are one.

3. He Salvages the Wavering. – vs. 3

Psalms 51:10-13
v10. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
v11. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.
v12. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.
v13.Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.

God restores and salvages lives that are wavering so that His name will be honored and glorified once again.

4. He Soothes the Worrying. – vs. 4

Isaiah 40:10-11
v10. Behold, the Lord GOD will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him: behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him.
v11. He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.

John 14:26-27
v26. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
v27. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

5. He Sustains the Warring. – vs. 5

Psalms 55:22
v22. Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.

Psalms 140:12-13
v12. I know that the LORD will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and the right of the poor.
v13. Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name: the upright shall dwell in thy presence.

Isaiah 58:11
v11. And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.

6. He Shelters the Willing. – vs. 6

John 15:4-9
v4. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
v5. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
v6. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
v7. If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
v8. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.
v9. As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.
