Washington Irving once said…A father may turn his back on his child; brothers and sisters may become inveterate enemies; husbands may desert their wives and wives their husbands. But a mother’s love endures through all; in good repute, in bad repute, in the face of the world’s condemnation, a mother still loves on, and still hopes that her child may turn from his evil ways, and repent; still she remembers the infant smiles that once filled her bosom with rapture, the merry laugh, the joyful shout of his childhood, the opening promise of his youth; and she can never be brought to think him all unworthy.

First Mention: Exodus 15:26
And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for am the LORD that healeth thee.

Meaning: The Lord That Healeth Thee

As Jehovah-Rophe, the Lord is like a mother…able to heal the deepest hurts of the body, the heart, and the mind. Mothers have that touch that comforts and that voice that dispenses love in every syllable.

God reveals himself in Scripture through various names that describe His character and relationships with mankind. We can see that variety very clearly in the first six chapters of Genesis:

Genesis 1:1 – God
Elohim – the creator God

Genesis 2:4 – LORD God
Jehovah-Elohim – the creator God that loves His creation

Genesis 4:1 – LORD
Jehovah – the loving God who cares

This is the first time mankind referred to him as something other than God…Eve will call him God again in Genesis 4:25 when Elohim – the creator – gives them another child to replace Abel.

Here is the proof of relationship with the name Jehovah to mankind:

Genesis 6:6
And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

As Jehovah-Rophe, our Lord loves us enough to help heal us where we hurt the most.

1. He Heals Our Iniquities.

The Lord’s first area of healing is to the soul of mankind.Matthew 9:2-13

Christ’s first concern was not for the physical but the spiritual condition of this young man. Yes, he had a crippling disease, but what good are two operational legs with one lost soul? Mark 9:45, Matthew 16:26

The LORD – Jehovah-Rophe – is concerned first with the healing of the spiritual condition of mankind.

Psalms 41:4 – PERSONAL

2 Chronicles 7:14 – NATIONAL

How many people have the testimony of having a mother who spent years on her knees in prayer that God would save their soul. Their mother’s were more interested in their eternity than their present.

Such is the relationship of Jehovah-Rophe with mankind.

Henry Ward Beecher
“God pardons like a mother who kisses away the repentant tears of her child.”

Christ even expressed that He was the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophesy…the one who would come to heal the great need. Luke 4:18, 1 Peter 2:21-24

2. He Heals Our Infirmities.

Because He is a personal LORD, He also cares about our physical bodies as well as the spiritual.

The LORD our healer is able to take care of our hurts because He is not only the God who cares but also who created us.

Part of Jesus’ Ministry on earth was to heal physically…Matthew 8:16-17

We have great and open access to the power of our healing LORD – Jehovah-Rophe – through prayer. James 5:13-16

3. He Heals Our Inadequacies.

The LORD our healer not only cares about the spiritual and physical areas of our life, but He also cares about the daily progression and walk of our life.

He heals our:

A. Bad Days
He cares about the distress of our days…Psalm 107:19-21

B. Broken Hearts
He cares about the hurts of our heart…Psalms 147:1-5

C. Backsliding
He cares about the state of our spirit…Jeremiah 3:22

In the book of Hosea, we see a progression of events that teaches us of the healing ministry of Jehovah-Rophe to a generation of people who had turned from His ways. Hosea 5:13, Hosea 6:1, Hosea 14:4, I John 1:9

Those passages should remind us of our faithful healer who is ready and willing to forgive as we confess.

Jehovah-Rophe truly is like a mother…he cares about what is making us hurt, and He desires to see those things removed. He grieves when we grieve…He hurts when we hurt…He is troubled when we are troubled…HE CARES!
